Sometimes Convoluted CBD Terminology Explained Chances are, if you’re looking to find the right CBD Product you’ve conducted a fair amount of research. Research that has helped you narrow down your choices and understand how you can benefit from CBD a bit more clearly. But perhaps, like many of us, the research we’ve conducted has left us feeling slightly more confused than when we started. In this blog we’ll help you decipher some of the seemingly cryptic language surrounding these terms.Â
Is Hemp Extract the same as CBD?Â
Hemp Extract is not the same as CBD, but it is, essentially, a synonym for CBD Oil. Why? Because Hemp Extract renders the CBD Oil that is produced from CBD, the active compound in Hemp which has been extracted. CBD Oil is often, textually, used in place of Hemp Extract to relay its function since Hemp, on its own, is much more widely purposed. Just as Hemp Extract is known by other names, CBD is more technically referred to as Cannabidiol.Â
Hemp Extract = CBD Oil CBD = CannabidiolÂ
While Hemp Extract is not correctly used synonymously with CBD, it is used accurately and interchangeably with CBD Oil. CBD is simply the active compound found within the oil that has been extracted.Â
Does Hemp Extract Contain CBD?Â
Hemp Extract will always contain Cannabidiol, or CBD. This is because Hemp Extract is, as afore mentioned, the same as CBD Oil. And CBD Oil most assuredly contains CBD.Â
Is Hemp Extract the same as Hemp Oil?Â
Yes and No.Â
In the industry, Hemp Oil is a general term often thrown around liberally. Its widely utilised and accepted to carry a definition that is sometimes incompatible with the term it is defining. Which means for those of us who are still learning the ins-and-outs of all things CBD, casual insertion of this term can often be confusing. Here’s why.Â
Â
Hemp Extract, from the perspective of many CBD manufacturers, is simply Hemp Oil. It is Hemp Oil which they’ve extracted from the Hemp Plant, so it is often referred to, generically, as such. You can imagine ‘oil’ and ‘extract’ used to describe Hemp much like the way you’d use the words ‘dog’ and ‘terrier’ to describe a puppy; two words characterising the same thing using descriptive grammatical additions./>Â
Â
But, depending on where you look online, the Hemp Oil you find might actually be Hemp Seed Oil instead.Â
What is the Difference between Hemp Oil and Hemp Seed Oil?Â
Essentially, because of relaxed usage of the term, Hemp Oil can be Hemp Seed Oil which contains no CBD. But don’t let this scare you. Hemp Seed Oil is marketed differently and it should be easy to spot when compared to its Cannabidiol containing counterpart.Â
Â
This is because Hemp Seed Oil is used primarily as a culinary oil, or cooking oil, while Hemp Extract (Hemp Oil as it’s often called) is widely accepted as a food supplement. Manufacturers of Hemp Oil containing Cannabidiol will be keen to advertise the presence of CBD because CBD is what the buzz is all about. In this respect, you might see products more specifically advertised as containing CBD Hemp Oil. Hemp Seed Oil manufacturers will not share in this claim to fame because, as Hemp Seed Oil is derived from only the Hemp Seeds, as opposed to the whole plant or parts of the whole plant used when obtaining Hemp Extract, it does not contain CBD.Â
Is Hemp Oil the Same as Hemp Extract?
Hemp Oil, though the definition might be challenged, is often labelled Hemp Extract. Because Hemp Extract is used interchangeably with CBD Oil and CBD Oil is often generically referred to as Hemp Oil, Hemp Extract = Hemp Oil = CBD Oil, for the most part.Â
Is Hemp Oil the same as CBD Oil?Â
As mentioned above, Hemp Oil is technically Hemp Seed Oil but is often used generically in place of CBD Oil, thanks to lax industry linguistics. More specifically, CBD Oil is the oil containing Cannabidiol, the active compound in CBD, which is extracted from the Hemp plant and most often used in CBD Tincture applications.Â
Â
Manufacturers should clearly mark their packaging not only to comply with legal guidelines but also to simplify the buying experience for the consumer. Figuring out which products containing CBD are right for you first starts with understanding the language and if after reading this, you find yourself equally dizzy in your initial quest for answers there are at least a few key words I can leave you with.Â
Full-Spectrum and Hemp ExtractÂ
When you see a product containing the description ‘Full Spectrum’ you can be sure of two things. First, is that you have found yourself a product containing CBD. Even if CBD has not been included as part of the description, the term ‘Full Spectrum’ implies that the Hemp Extract taken was done so using parts or all of the Hemp Plant rich in Cannabinoids (CBD). Second, thanks to our earlier clarification, the term ‘Hemp Extract’ which is used synonymously with CBD Oil, in fact, denotes the presence of Cannabidiol (CBD).Â

Hemp Oil UK – Conclusion
When it comes to reviewing relevant terminology, the lines in terms of CBD are blurry. Here are the important points to remember:Â
- Hemp Extract is often generally (yet inaccurately and still acceptably) called Hemp Oil.Â
- Hemp Oil can be Hemp Seed Oil which contains no CBD.Â
- Hemp Oil is often the same as CBD Oil, especially if the term Full Spectrum is used in conjunction.Â
- Hemp Extract implies Full-Spectrum benefits while Hemp Seed Oil denotes a far lesser concentration, in fact none of the active compound, Cannabidiol.Â
- The Terms ‘Full Spectrum’ and ‘Hemp Extract’ are reliable indicators that you’ve found a product containing CBD if CBD can otherwise not be found on the label.Â
