CBD Interactions: CBD is not recommended for people taking medication to treat a mental or physical condition. They may be concerned about CBD interfering with their drug treatment. We’ll be discussing which medications should be avoided when using CBD.
While CBD products can be purchased as supplements in the United Kingdom but Epidyolex has been approved for use as a medicine to treat epileptic disorders such as Dravet and Lennox Gastaut.
CBD can interact with other drugs
What drugs should not be taken with CBD? CBD can interfere with or compete for enzymes in your liver that break down medications. This is known as altered concentration. The medicine could stop working or cause side effects due to the altered concentration.
Drug interactions are often difficult to predict and can lead to serious, sometimes fatal, side effects. CBD, for example, can interact with other molecules in the body through enzymes like Cytochrome P-450, which are involved in pharmacological and chemical substrate metabolism.
Five prescription CBD and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cannabis drugs were tested by researchers from Penn State College of Medicine [1]. Researchers from Penn State College of Medicine further reduced the list to 57 drugs, for which a concentration change could prove fatal.
This list contains a variety of medications, including heart medications and antibiotics. However, not all of these medications are likely to be affected if CBD-only products are used.
- Warfarin, a well-known blood thinner, could cause serious medication interactions with CBD.
- Amiodarone, a cardiac rhythm medicine.
- Levothyroxine is a thyroid medicine.
- Clobazam, lamotrigine and valproate are just a few of the seizure medications.
Grapefruit warning
Some drugs have warnings that people who take them should avoid grapefruit. Grapefruit can interfere with your body’s CYP3A4 enzyme, which is responsible for breaking down drugs.
CBD has been shown to block CYP3A4 enzymes, similar to grapefruit. This could lead to a higher level of medicine in the bloodstream and unwelcome side effects.
Are you able to provide evidence of CBD?
CBD has great potential. There are not enough clinical trials to support CBD for chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia and other conditions.
For further research, it will be necessary to conduct larger-scale human trials. The UK is currently researching CBD’s effects upon anxiety, psychosis and pain management in chronic conditions.
The most advanced research into schizophrenia and rare forms of epilepsy is currently underway. CBD-grade medical-grade CBD is the most commonly used in clinical trials. It is not known whether CBD-grade medical-grade CBD can have an effect at lower levels. There are not established dosage guidelines.
Regulators have given some guidance about the upper limit. Although CBD has been shown to cause liver damage in some studies, the Food Standards Authority (FSA) says that the evidence is not conclusive.
FSA recommends adults limit intake to 70 mg daily. This applies unless a doctor has approved. This is approximately 28 drops of 5% CBD.
What drugs are not recommended to be taken with grapefruit/CBD
The NHS predicts that the following drugs will interact with grapefruit (and possibly CBD) according to [2]. Before making any decision, always consult a doctor.
- Drugs that are used to treat cancer: crizotinib and dasatinib; erlotinib; everolimus; lapatinib; nilotinib. pazopanib. sunitinib. vandetanib. vemurafenib.
- Treatments and preventive drugs for infections: erythromycin, maraviroc (halofantrine), halofantrine primaquine, quinine and rilpivirine).
- High cholesterol drugs (atorvastatin and simvastatin),
- Drugs that treat heart and blood vessel problems (amiodarones, clopidogrels, dronedarones, eplerenones, felidipine, nifedipine. quinidine. rivaroxaban. ticagrelor).
- Drugs that affect the central nervous system (oral alfentanil and buspirone, oral dextromethorphan or oral ketamine), oral fentanyl, oral pimozide. oral fentanyl, oral bupropione, oral ketamine, oral oxycodone. oral fentanyl. oral fentanyl. oral fentanyl. oral oxycodone. oral fentanyl. oral fentanylam, triazolam, zidone
- Domperidone is a drug used to treat nausea
- Immunosuppressants (cyclosporine. everolimus. sirolimus. tacrolimus.
- Drugs that treat conditions of the urinary tract (darifenacin and fesoterodine), silodosin or silodosin; tamsulosin).
Be aware of side effects
Follow your doctor’s instructions. If your doctor says it is okay to use CBD, they will recommend that you monitor any side effects or changes, such as:
- Your medication’s effectiveness may decrease
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Diarrhoea
- Appetite loss/increase
- Weight fluctuations

What drugs should not be taken with CBD? CBD can interact with many different products including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements and pharmaceuticals. Other factors such as the dosage of CBD and the amount of another medication can also influence drug interactions.
Due to the fact that people in a particular age group are more likely to take multiple drugs, they are more susceptible to drug interactions.
Before considering using CBD products, it is important to consult your doctor. This is especially true if you are on any other medications, have heart disease, epilepsy or other conditions that could weaken your immune system (e.g., cancer medication).
