Dr Christian on 'Full spectrum CBD - What is the entourage effect?'

The entourage effect is said to be the combined effect of the cannabis plant’s cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids and several other groups of phtyo-chemcials in the plant, all working together to for enhanced effect.    ‘Full Spectrum’ refers to a product containing many different cannabinoids, which tends to include compounds such as THC and CBN – both of which are Controlled Substances in the UK.  Levels of these compounds can vary from product-to-product. Always ensure you are getting a compliant product by checking the Certificate-of-Analysis; if manufactured and tested correctly, these CoA’s can help assure that the products are void of any undesirable cannabinoids.  However, beyond cannabinoids, CBD oil products that include natural hemp oil (not just carrier oils like MCT coconut) will have the terpenes, flavonoids etc. present that are said to contribute to the entourage effect.

Full-spectrum CBD: What is the Entourage Effect and How Does it Work?

Cannabinoids, a naturally occurring compound in marijuana, can cause drug-like effects throughout the body.

The “entourage effect” is a theory that multiple cannabis plant compounds can be added to CBD extract to increase the health benefits.

This article will explain what full-spectrum CBD is and how you can decide if it is right for your needs.

What does full spectrum CBD refer to?

Full-spectrum CBD is the purest form possible of CBD from the plant. However, it does not contain any other ingredients.

Cannabinoids of minor importance

Cannabinoids found in hemp that are minor cannabinoids include CBD and THC. Because they are found in smaller amounts, such as 0.01mg to 5-5mg per 1000mg of extract, they are called “minor” cannabisbinoids.

They are a key component in the synergistic effect of CBD products, despite their tiny presence. CBD and THC are responsible for the psychotropic and therapeutic effects of cannabis products. However, THC is more intoxicating than CBD.

Cannabigerol

CBG, or Cannabigerol, is a cannabis cannabinoid. Scientists have studied CBG’s antibacterial, and digestive properties.

Cannabinol, (CBN)

THC can be aged in order to make CBN or CBD can converted into CBN. CBN has been studied for neuroprotective benefits and has sleep-promoting properties for many who use it.

Cannabichromene

Cannabichromene, also known as CBC is a less-known cannabinoid which has been studied for its analgesic effects. CBC’s activity regulates inflammation and pain by binding to TRPV1 receptors within the nervous system.

Terpenes

There are more than 150 terpenes in cannabis. They can alter the aroma of cannabis and provide therapeutic benefits.

Flavonoids

There are approximately 20 different flavonoids found in cannabis. There are many plant species that contain flavonoids. Flavonoids have the same therapeutic properties as terpenes. Cannaflavins are flavonoids found in marijuana and hemp.

According to a 2011 study, flavonoids have the following properties:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antioxidant
  • Neuroprotective
  • Heart disease risk is lower

What is the entourage effect?

full spectrum CBD – The entourage effect basically refers to the combination of several compounds working together. Our bodies absorb hundreds of botanical compounds when we smoke or vape cannabis. Each one has its own benefits and effects.

Terpenes, a class of chemical compound found in hemp, are key aromatic molecules that give plants their distinctive scent.

These are the health benefits of three terpenes. Linalool (impressive antibacterial properties) and Guaiol, (believed have significant anti-inflammatory effects) (may provide antiparasitic advantages).

Terpenes play an important role within the Entourage Effect. They also have a variety of health benefits, including anticancer, antifungal and antiviral, analgesics, antiparasitic, antihyperglycemic and analgesic.

Which CBD is best?

Full spectrum CBD – Distillate CBD Crumble is a concentrated form full-spectrum CBD. CBD crumble is a waxy substance that can be vaporized or “dabbed” frequently. It also contains CBN and CBG.

CBD waxes are made from a range of plant ingredients known to be beneficial to hemp extract’s therapeutic properties, such as cannabinoids and plant terpenes.

CBD tinctures can be made by steeping cannabis in alcohol. CBD oils can be created by suspending CBD oil in carrier oils like olive oil or coconut oil. It is possible to find a tincture containing 2500mg. One 1mL glass portion contains 83mg CBD. This is in addition to the daily recommended dose of 30-60mg. CBD users who are looking for a simple and quick CBD regimen using high-quality, hemp-derived CBD.

Types of CBD products that produce the entourage effect

CBD products can contain many different types of hemp extracts. You can get the entourage effect from the raw extracts to the isolate cannabinoids. Vaporized cannabinoids or terpenes show the highest bioavailability.
